What Water Teaches Us About Emotional Wellness
What if the secret to emotional wellness could be found in water and the joy of a dog?
That’s exactly what I discovered through Spice, my water-loving companion. From the very first day, she was a water dog through and through immersed in the joy, freedom, and serenity that only water could bring. Watching her, I realized that water was more than play; it was her sanctuary, her healer, and her daily practice in mindfulness and emotional wellness.
Seeing the way she returned to water again and again made me wonder how often we overlook the small rituals that help us feel refreshed, grounded, and emotionally renewed.
Daily Rituals: Sacred Time in the Lake
From the earliest days of spring until the last leaves of fall, we made a daily pilgrimage to the local lake. Spice never missed a day. She would swim far and wide, twirling with the swans and ducks, her joy boundless and effortless.
That ritual wasn’t just exercise. It was a practice in grounding. Day after day, the water seemed to clear her energy, steady her spirit, and restore her sense of balance. Sometimes she would simply lie down in the lake, fully surrendered to the water’s embrace, as if trusting it to hold everything she no longer needed.
Moments like that quietly invite us to consider what small, consistent ritual might bring the same sense of calm and renewal into our own lives.

Playful Joy: Pool Games and Balls
At home, the swimming pool became her stage for pure play. She would lie in the water, eyes fixed on me as I held a ball, patiently waiting for the next toss. When it came, she was all in; body, heart, and attention fully present in that single moment.
Her playfulness was a gentle reminder that joy isn’t accidental. It’s something we practice. Fully engaging in what we love, without distraction or urgency, nourishes our emotional wellness in ways we often underestimate.
It’s worth asking what moments of simple, immersive joy we might be postponing and what could happen if we gave ourselves permission to return to them.

Sprinklers: Active Rejuvenation and Soul Cleansing
Spice also adored the sprinklers. She would twirl through the streams, chase the jets of water, and drink deeply from them with pure delight. It was playful, energetic, and unmistakably alive.
Watching her, I realized that wellness isn’t always quiet or still. Sometimes it’s active, messy, and full of movement. There’s a kind of rejuvenation that comes from engaging fully with what refreshes us while letting energy move through the body instead of holding it in.
Even small moments of playful movement can shift our mood, lift our spirits, and remind us that renewal doesn’t have to be complicated.
Rest and Surrender: Peace in the Pool
After hours of swimming, playing, and chasing water, Spice would simply rest. She would lie in the pool in the middle of the day, eyes closed, body still, completely surrendered to the moment.
Those quiet pauses were some of her most powerful lessons. Emotional and mental wellness doesn’t come only from action; it also comes from allowing ourselves to stop. From trusting that we don’t always need to do more. That sometimes we just need to be held.
There is a deep kind of healing available when we give ourselves permission to pause, breathe, and let the world support us for a moment.

Closing Reflection: Finding Your Water
Where is your water? Where do you feel most immersed, restored, and free?
Spice’s love of water was more than play. It was a daily practice in joy, mindfulness, and emotional wellness. My hope is that we all find our own rivers, lakes, sprinklers, or quiet pools to return to each day. Those places or practices that reconnect us with what restores our body, mind, and soul.
When you notice what nourishes you, don’t rush past it. Let yourself linger there. Let yourself immerse.
