Spice’s Window to the World (and What It Taught Me)

When I first brought Spice home as a tiny puppy, she could barely see over the windowsill. Still, she stretched her neck as far as it would go, determined to catch a glimpse of the world outside. That window quickly became her spot, her lookout, her perch, her daily ritual. Over the years, I watched her grow from a wobbly little pup who had to scramble for a view into a wise old soul who claimed her place there with quiet dignity.

What struck me most was not just that she loved the window, but how she looked out of it. Spice saw the world with open eyes, filled with curiosity, awe, and wonder. She didn’t just glance. She studied, she listened, she absorbed. Sometimes she sat in perfect silence, ears perked, simply taking it all in. Other times, she stood tall and alert, ready to protect us from any squirrel or cat who dared get too close. That window wasn’t just glass to her. It was a lens into life itself. And in her way, Spice taught me that sometimes the greatest lessons come not from doing, but from watching.

Puppy Days – Curiosity & Wonder

In the beginning, everything was new and exciting. Birds, leaves, shadows, even a passing cloud could catch her attention for minutes at a time. She approached each moment with awe, soaking in the tiniest details. Through her, I began to notice things I had taken for granted: the way sunlight danced on the floor, the rhythm of neighborhood life, the gentle sway of trees in the wind.

Lesson: Life is full of wonder when we open our eyes to it. Even if we can’t see the whole picture yet, curiosity gives us the courage to explore and appreciate the small joys.

Growing Up – Patient Observation

As Spice matured, she learned the art of stillness. She could sit for hours by the window, silently watching people, squirrels, or cars passing by. Her observation was never idle. She absorbed lessons from the world without needing to interfere. Patience became her companion, and through her, I realized that so much of life can be understood simply by being present.

Lesson: Observation and patience often teach more than action. By slowing down, we notice patterns, emotions, and details that would otherwise slip by unnoticed.

Protector at the Window – Responsibility & Care

Spice wasn’t just a passive observer; she was vigilant. Every unusual sound, every unfamiliar figure, and even the rustle of a stray leaf earned her careful scrutiny. Her protective instincts were gentle yet unwavering. She made sure I was safe without ever creating unnecessary panic.

Lesson: Protecting those we love doesn’t always mean grand gestures. Sometimes it’s the quiet, steady presence that matters most. Love shows itself in subtle ways, in acts of care and attentiveness.

Her Later Years – Wisdom & Perspective

In her later years, her gaze softened but deepened. She no longer scrambled for the best view; she settled into her window with calm assurance, taking in life with quiet reflection. She reminded me that wisdom comes with time, experience, and a willingness to truly see. Her curiosity never faded, but it became tempered with understanding, a reminder that life is richer when approached with both awe and patience.

Lesson: Perspective evolves. Life’s beauty grows more profound when we slow down and reflect, appreciating what’s right in front of us.

What Spice Taught Me

From a small, eager puppy to a wise, watchful companion, Spice left me with lessons that reach far beyond a windowsill:

  • Curiosity keeps life vibrant.

  • Patience reveals hidden truths.

  • Quiet observation can be more powerful than constant action.

  • Protecting those you love often means being present, not controlling.

  • A window can be more than glass — it can be a lens into life’s beauty.

Closing Reflection & Thoughts

Spice’s window to the world was our classroom, her stage, and our sanctuary. Though she’s no longer here, her lessons remain.

For years, she perched beside me as I worked at my computer, and now a windchime my friend Claudia gave me hangs in that very same window with paw prints etched into it. A promise that we’ll meet again in another happy place.

When the breeze stirs it, the gentle chime feels like Spice herself, sending love and quiet blessings, reminding me to move through life with the same curiosity, patience, and wonder she carried every day.
