Living Fully
As the summer sun begins to soften and the evenings grow just a little cooler, I find myself reflecting on the “dog days of summer.” For most of us, this phrase brings to mind the laziest, hottest, stickiest part of the season. But for Spice, the dog days of summer were something entirely different. They were her season of joy.
Spice lived summer fully present, lighthearted, and without a single care holding her back. She didn’t worry about tomorrow or hang onto yesterday. She embraced every warm breeze, every splash of water, every sunny afternoon.
Looking back at her photos, I realize she left behind lessons that I have carried with me long after the summer faded.
Sunglasses & Sunshine
One of my favorite photos of Spice is her lying in the grass with her sunglasses on, soaking up the rays as if she knew she was the star of her own summer vacation. That was her secret: she knew how to rest. Spice taught me that sometimes the most important thing you can do is nothing at all. Just stretch out, breathe deep, and let the sun kiss your face.
Finding Joy in the Simple Things
Spice also loved sitting in our front yard, perched in her chair, watching the world go by. She didn’t need grand adventures every single day. Sometimes, the joy was simply in being there, taking in the little things that so often pass us by.
Diving into What You Love
If there was water, Spice was in it. Whether it was our pool or the lake at the park, she dove in with pure excitement. And she would stay in the pool for hours, until I made her come out to rest. There was no hesitation, no second guessing. Spice taught me to throw myself fully into the things that bring me joy. Because that’s where life feels the most alive.
Nature Heals
Spice never overlooked the magic of the outdoors. The park, the lake, and open air were her favorite places to cool off and recharge. She reminded me that nature has a way of grounding us, healing us, and bringing us back to ourselves.
Living Carefree in the Dog Days
Spice’s spirit was carefree, and summer seemed to amplify that. She didn’t just live the season. She immersed herself in it. The dog days of summer weren’t a countdown to the end; they were her invitation to savor every moment.
And that’s what she left me with: the reminder to rest when I need to, to find joy in simple things, to dive wholeheartedly into what I love, and to let nature remind me of who I am. Most of all, to live carefree. And not just in summer, but all year long.
As we say goodbye to another season of sunshine, I carry her lessons with me. The dog days of summer may be winding down, but the wisdom of Spice lingers on, bright as ever.
