Long Car Rides Solve Everything

Some dogs love the park. Others love chasing a ball. Spice loved long car rides. To her, the car wasn’t just a vehicle. It was a sanctuary, an adventure, and sometimes, even an answer to life’s problems.

Always the Front-Seat Passenger

Spice never settled for the back. If I was the passenger, she wedged all 78 pounds of herself right onto my lap, pressing against me with determination. If I was driving, she sat tall and proud beside me, the most loyal copilot I could ever ask for. She was never content to be far away. She wanted to be where the action was, always close, always present.

A Family Memory on the Road

One of my favorite photos (the featured image of this post) shows Spice half in the back seat and half in the front, wedged between my mom, who was driving, and me as the passenger. It was pure Spice: unwilling to miss out, refusing to take a back seat in life or in love.

Errands, Ice Cream, and Pup Cups

I never left her behind. Spice went everywhere with me- quick errands, slow meandering drives, or special trips to her favorite spots. She loved walking the isles of the hardware store, greeting strangers like old friends. But her true delight was ice cream runs, when she knew a pup cup was waiting just for her.

Spiritual Companionship on Wheels

Those rides were more than errands. They were moments of soul connection. Sitting side by side, windows down, playing music- Spice radiated a presence that turned ordinary drives into sacred journeys. Even now, I can still feel her energy in the car.

The Car She Left Behind

Since she’s passed, I haven’t been able to clean my car. Her paw prints still decorate the dashboard. Her slobber remains smeared on the windows and mirrors. Even the stains and dirt pressed into the passenger’s seat feel holy now, a reminder that she was there, watching, loving, and protecting. Her spirit lingers, and in some way, every ride still feels like a ride with her.

Reflection: Lessons from the Passenger Seat

When I think about those drives, I realize Spice was teaching me something deeper. She showed me that the journey matters more than the destination, that being present beside someone is often the greatest act of love. She never worried about where we were going. She just trusted the ride. Maybe that’s a lesson for all of us: to loosen our grip on control, roll down the window, and let life’s wind remind us we’re still moving forward, even when the road is unclear.

Closing Thought

Long car rides didn’t just solve everything. They revealed everything. They showed me the healing power of companionship, presence, and unconditional love. Spice may no longer sit beside me, but her love fills the passenger seat forever.

If this story touched your heart, share it with someone who knows the comfort of a loyal copilot. Take a drive today and feel the peace that comes from simply being present in the moment.
