Hugs Heal Hearts: A Lesson From Spice

The Power of a Puppy Hug

Some moments in life stop you in your tracks. Recently, while going through old photos of Spice, I found a picture of her as a baby. She was standing on the couch, leaning into me with her tiny paws, as if she were trying to hug me.

She was just a few weeks old, still clumsy and unsure of the world. But somehow, even then, she knew I needed her. She pressed her warm little body against me not just to stay cozy, but to connect.

Looking at that picture again reminded me of how from the very beginning, Spice was more than just a puppy. She was my little protector, my north star.

Twelve Years Later – Still Hugging

Fast forward twelve years. Spice had walked with me through everything: heartbreaks, tough seasons, laughter-filled moments, and quiet evenings of peace.

One day, I snapped another photo, not realizing how much it mirrored the first. There she was, in nearly the exact same position with her leaning against me, giving me one of her famous hugs.

When I put the two photos side by side, I couldn’t help but cry. So much life had happened in between, but the way she loved me hadn’t changed.

Why Hugs Heal Hearts

Science tells us that hugs release oxytocin, the “love hormone” that helps lower stress, calm the heart, and lift our mood. But I didn’t need science to tell me. Spice was living proof.

Every time she leaned on me, it was like she was saying:
“I’ve got you. You’re safe. We’re in this together.”

Those little moments healed me in ways I can’t fully explain.

The Lesson Spice Left Behind

Spice taught me that sometimes, words aren’t necessary. You don’t have to know what to say to someone who’s hurting. You just have to show up, lean in, and let them feel your presence.

Sometimes the smallest hug can make the biggest difference.

Your Turn

When was the last time you gave (or received) a healing hug? Take a moment today to hug your pet or someone you love. Feel the difference it makes. Together, we can spread a little more heart-healing into the world.
