From the very first day I brought Spice home, she seemed to be fueled by sunshine. Even as a tiny puppy, she would wiggle her way into a warm patch of light on the floor or roll onto her back in the grass, as if she already knew that sunlight was food for the soul. Like plants, we all need water, sunshine, and love to grow. Spice taught me this lesson again and again throughout her life.
Puppyhood in the Sun
Spice’s love for the sun was instinctive. She would nap in every ray that streamed through the window, her little furry body glowing as if she were charging her spirit like a solar panel. From the very beginning, she showed me that warmth and light weren’t just luxuries but rather essentials.
A Daily Ritual of Sunshine
One of my favorite memories is the way she would place her paw gently on me while we were in the grass, almost as if she was holding me down and saying, “Stop. Stay. Soak in the sun with me.” And so, I did. It became our daily ritual of pausing, breathing, and just lying there together, face to the sky, hearts wide open.
Sunshine in Every Season
No matter her age, Spice always found her way to the light. There’s a photo of her sprawled out in a beach chair, fast asleep on the deck, the picture of bliss. Years later, I’d find her curled in the garden while I worked, basking in the glow as if the sun itself was keeping her company. Even as she grew older, she carried that same lesson: that light and rest are never wasted.
The Science and Spirit of Sunshine
Of course, we know the sun blesses us with vitamin D, boosts our mood, and helps us feel alive. But Spice reminded me it’s more than just science. It’s spiritual. Sunshine is a reminder that we are cared for, warmed, and nourished by something greater than ourselves. Taking a few minutes each day to turn my face to the sky became a sacred practice, one she started and one I now continue. And with each moment in the light, I find myself quietly grateful for the warmth, for the day, and for the simple gift of being here to enjoy it.
Spice was My Sunshine
I sang to Spice: ‘You are my sunshine.’ When I first brought her home, she was so small and scared, unsure of this new world. To comfort her, I began singing that song. During thunderstorms, when the sky growled and she trembled, I sang it again, my voice becoming her shelter. At night, as we curled up together and drifted toward sleep, the melody was our lullaby.
For twelve years this became our ritual, woven into the rhythm of our days. From her earliest puppy nights to her final moments at the vet, the song never failed to make her respond. She would lick my face immediately cleaning me like a mother dog does her puppies, as if she understood the words in her own way. Spice truly was the sunshine of my life, my ‘great central sun,’ and that bond lives on even now.
Carrying the Light Forward
When I miss her most, I step outside, close my eyes, and let the sun warm my face. I hear her message as clearly as the song I used to sing: Pause. Rest. Breathe. Soak in the light and remember to give thanks. That is her legacy, the lesson she left me and the one I now share with you.
So today, take five minutes to find your own patch of sunshine. Stretch out, let the light consume you, and remember that sometimes the greatest wisdom comes from simply stopping to bask in the glow.
Spice may no longer be lying in the grass beside me, but she will forever be my sunshine. Spice’s light lives on when her story is shared. If this message resonated with you, please pass it along to a friend who could use a little sunshine today.
