Gardening as Passion, Practice, and Presence
One of my greatest passions in this chapter of life has been gardening. It was a sacred, hands-on practice that connects creativity, presence, and the cycles of life. Spice and I spent countless hours barefoot, covered in dirt, drinking from the hose, digging, uprooting, and planting together. Each day in the garden was a lesson in mindfulness, patience, and joy. Gardening became more than a hobby; it became a spiritual practice, a place to express love and witness the quiet miracles of growth.
Sunflowers of the Past – Growth and Possibility
In my previous garden, a single sunflower grew taller than anyone expected, stretching six feet high from a seed I had planted and nearly forgotten. It reminded me that growth doesn’t depend on location, but on light, nourishment, and the love that surrounds us. That sunflower became a beacon of possibility, teaching me that even the smallest seeds, tended with care, can become miracles. These lessons carried forward into my current garden, guiding how I nurtured both the earth and my own heart.
The Firepit Garden – Rebirth, Ritual, and Renewal
At my new home, a firepit became a flowerbed and a circle of earth ready for planting and creation. Spice dug beside me with her usual determination, taking nearly twenty minutes to find the perfect spot to settle in. She circled forty times carefully, deliberately before finally plopping down to watch me work, her eyes following every movement. Watching her perfect this ritual brought me endless joy, a reminder that even small acts can hold deep meaning. Each day in this firepit garden reaffirmed that growth often comes from transformation, that healing takes patience, and that play, persistence, and love make even the hardest work feel alive. This garden became more than soil and seeds. It’s where I’ve nurtured both plants and connections, watching love and guidance bloom alongside every flower.

The Bird Bath – Playful Ownership and Innocent Joy
Spice claimed the garden as her own, delighting in even the simplest pleasures. The blue petal-shaped bird bath became her sparkling oasis. Watching her drink, splash, and lounge beside it reminded me that joy is found in playful ownership and innocent delight, and that happiness often comes from embracing curiosity and claiming your place in the world.
The Praying Mantis – Spiritual Insight, Patience, Stillness, and Wonder
Amid the activity of planting and digging, a praying mantis resting on a leaf reminded me of the beauty of stillness. Spice observed it calmly, demonstrating that patience, respect, and quiet observation are just as important as action. These moments showed me that spiritual insight can come through observing and honoring life’s rhythms, cultivating patience, stillness, and wonder, lessons my dad had reinforced over years of gardening.
Dad’s Legacy – Perennials, Plants, and Love
My father has been an essential part of my gardening journey. Over the years, he helped till the soil, guided me in planting, and shared perennials and plants from his own garden. Each perennial represents rebirth, returning year after year as a living symbol of his love and care. Sharing his plants with me transfers his legacy, teaching me patience, generosity, and the continuity of life. Through our time in the garden together over the past decade, we’ve grown closer than ever, nurturing not only plants but a bond that deepens with every season. Through him, I learned that gardening isn’t just about what you grow. It’s about what you pass on. His love and guidance intertwine with Spice’s presence, creating a space of enduring lessons and memory.
Spice Napping in the Sun – Peace, Presence, and Savoring Simple Moments
Spice often curled up in the sun, resting amidst the soil before any planting began. Those quiet moments reminded me that peace, presence, and savoring simple moments are as vital as work. Combined with the lessons from my dad and the shared rhythms of gardening, these moments became profound reminders that growth unfolds naturally when we are patient, mindful, and loving.

Spice in the Back Garden – Guardian of Your World, Protector of Memories
Spice often positioned herself proudly in the back garden, watching over every corner. With my dad’s guidance and her gentle spirit, the garden became a sanctuary of memory, love, and enduring lessons. She reminded me that we can be guardians of our world and protectors of what we love, and that some bonds, like well-tended roots, endure forever.
The Lessons We Dug Up – A Garden of Love and Legacy
Through gardening, I’ve discovered that growth is not just for plants. Bonds with those we love—like my father and my loyal companion Spice—can flourish, season after season, when nurtured with care and presence. This garden is more than flowers and soil. It is a living testament to growth, love, and legacy. Every seed, every bloom, and every quiet observation carries the lessons my dad and Spice taught me.
This spring, I will plant a new garden in honor of Spice, ensuring her spirit continues to guide the blossoms and the miracles that still find their way here. As you move through your own seasons, may you find small ways to plant love, whether in the soil, in your memories, or in the hearts of others. Because the truest lesson the garden ever taught me is this: love, once planted, never stops growing.
